Natalya Ushkina sensationally beat almost the entire Russian national team. New hope for Russian biathlon? No matter how it is! She has already been lured to Romania.
Russian biathlon team is losing a talent again. Anastasia Kuzmina, Daria Domracheva , the Kruchinkin sisters – the list is long. And here’s another replenishment.
Natalia Ushkina sensationally beat almost the entire Russian national team in the sprint at the Russian Championship. Is this really the new hope of our biathlon? Yes, no matter how! There was no place for her in the national team of Russia, and in Romania they hurried up and lured away the young athlete. With a high degree of probability, she will represent this country at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.
Who is Natalia Ushkina?
Natalya Ushkina is only 24 years old, that is, the age for biathlon is excellent. The athlete from the Republic of Mordovia, like many, began with cross-country skiing, and at the age of 14 she switched to biathlon. At her first junior world championship in 2015 in the capital of Belarus, Minsk, Natalya won the silver medal in the relay discipline.
But the next year, Ushkina failed her stage and earn no medals for team Russia.
She has been going to the young and promising for a long time, collecting medals at the European junior championships, winning the junior world championship in summer biathlon, twice being the medalist of the championship and the Cup of Russia. Ushkina waited for a chance, but didn’t get it.
And then there was an option with the trasnsfer to the Romanian national team.
In August 2020, Natalia applied for the move, applied for the citizenahip there and in November she already became a Romanian citizen.
“I have already been released from Russia”
And despite such a brilliant result at the Russian Championship, Ushkina does not intend to stay in Russia, as announced on the air of Match TV after the end of the sprint in Khanty-Mansiysk. It is very likely that Russian biathlon has again missed a talented athlete.
Natalia is saying: “The result has become high only this year. This was not the case that year, but now there is a breakthrough. Last year I was invited to the Romanian national team, all this time the documents were being made, I just waited. I was released from Russia, given the go in advance. I have already decided everything and I am not going to stay in Russia. In May, the issue of contracts will be resolved. I do not regret that I moved to Romania. If there is an offer you can’t refuse? No, I won’t accept it anyway. All is decided”.
In contrary there are a lot of examples when young talents representing their country and very proud about it. For example, young Czech talent, Marketa Davidova is representing Czech Republic and shows an improvement from year to year.
Her highest achievement is a victory is World Championship 2021 in Pokljuka where she managed to win 15 km Individual race.
